Soy Wax Candles
Our soy wax candles are made from a completely natural renewable source and are completely GM free. For those of you who are new to soy wax candles here is some useful information.
History
Due to the ever increasing demand for more natural products a producer of Beeswax candles Micheal Richards decided he needed to find a more affordable alternative source of wax. In 1992 he started to test several different types of oil for a good alternative. He suceeded in producing the first vegetable wax candle however the wax was to hard and brittle. For the next few years he carried on producing beeswax candles whilst still hoping to find the right blend of oils to give him a more pliable softer wax. In 1994 he produced the first blended soy wax candle blending it with the beeswax.
In 1996 Micheal started to test hydrogenated soy bean oil to produce soy wax. He eventually succeeded in creating the soy wax in two types one for container candles and one for pillar candleles which is what we use in our candles today.
Why use soy wax?
Soy wax is hydrogenated soy bean oil which is a completely natural product made from soy beans. It is a completely renewable source of oil where as paraffin wax which is made from petroleum is not. It is also biodegradable which means it will naturally break down over time. The soy wax we use is also from a completely GM free source.
Benefits
From a practical point of view why do I think everyone should switch to using soy wax? Soy wax can last longer some studies have shown up to 50% longer than parafin wax. Soy wax produces 90% less soot than paraffin wax. It is a more environmentally friendly product. Soy wax also releases more fragrance into the room than paraffin wax due to its lower melting temperature. Also if you spill soy wax you can just clean it up with hot soapy water or if you spill some soy wax on your skin it is a natural enough product to just rub into your skin like a moisturiser!
Health Benefits
There has recently been studies done showing the possible harmful toxins given off when burning paraffin wax and although I feel it is too early to say whether this holds merit or not soy wax has no such harmful effects as it is a much more natural product.
Cost
Although soy wax is more expensive than paraffin wax I think the benefits outweigh the cost and you the customer will get a much better product if you are prepared to spend just a little more!
